The 2012 National Summer Steamup was
the 17th year for this event (10th at the Lions Gate Hotel) and had 127
steamers attend including 7 from Canada. In addition to the steamers, an
additional 80 plus people came as guests. These were spouses, children and
anyone interested in seeing what the steam up is like.
This year the Steamup venue was moved
from the Pavilion to a large hangar (we only used about 20%). There was
plenty of space but unfortunately no air conditioning where the tracks
were located. The Steam Events team provided three large tracks with seven
loops. Two loops were dual gauge 45 and 32 mm and five were 45 mm. In
addition, there were three smaller tracks in the back each with two 45 mm
loops. There was plenty of room and everyone had enough track time.
The hanger also included an air
conditioned room that was used as both the dealer room and for the
clinics/seminars that were presented daily. Saturday night featured a BBQ
(hot dogs & hamburgers) with all the fixn’s. The weather outside was hot
so it was nice to be in an air-conditioned banquet room.
Back at the hanger the BBQ was
followed by the presentation of the annual Ron Brown Memorial Steamup
Enthusiasm Award. This year it was presented to Brittany Grimm, a guest
steamer, attending courtesy of the Make A Wish foundation. Many of the
steamers attending this year’s steamup also got together and made a
donation to the Make A Wish foundation in the amount greater than $1500.
Then came the door prize drawings which were lots of fun.
The venue will again be changing for
next year's 18th National Summer Steamup. This time into the back of the
Lions Gate McClellan Conference Center and IT WILL BE AIR CONDITIONED. It
will be held from Wednesday July 17, 2013, starting at 6 pm until Sunday
July 21st. We hope you will make plans to attend. For additional
